Phthalates, Sulfates, and Parabens, What are they?

Phthalates, Sulfates, and Parabens

What are they?

I’m sure you’ve heard news about products that contain the ingredient “phthalates, sulfates and parabens”. These ingredients are known to be harmful to our body. Manufacturers use these ingredients because they are cheap raw materials and they get the job done. They are usually found in hair, skin, face and even body products. They all have drying effects that take away the well-needed moisture from our hair, skin, and face. Thus resulting in these parts to be very dry, brittle and weak. However,

Let’s break down each ingredient:

Phthalates:

Definition: Are chemicals that are used to soften plastic and vinyl.

Why Are They A Hazard? The hazardous effects of phthalates are still being researched are not fully known to the public. However, studies have shown that Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) can cause endocrine disruptions. In addition, cancer and reproductive issues may stem from using products with phthalates.

Parabens:

Definition: Parabens are a man-made chemical, specifically, a type of preservative used in products. They prolong the shelf life of the many beauty products. Hence, they won’t be spoilt quickly.

Why Are They A Hazard? It’s pretty obvious why parabens are bad for us. It’s because they extend the life of the product far beyond its natural shelf life. After the other ingredients may have expired the product is still in good condition. Also, they are used on our body especially our skin and hair. Thus, allowing us to reap the harmful ingredients. Also, the ingredient is known to be a contributory element to cancer, specifically breast cancer in women. Lastly, reproductive organs are affected as well thus causing reproductive issues.

Sulfates:

Definition: Sulfates are a salt that forms into sulfuric acid when it reacts with another chemical. They are commonly known in your products as sodium laureth or lauryl sulfate.

Why Are They A Hazard? Sulfates give your personal care products the lather needed to cleanse. They are derived from petroleum which is known to withdraw the moisture from your body. Hence, using products with sulfates in excess can be bad for you. For example, shampoos with sulfate are great if your hair produces excess oil. However, if your sebum production is balanced then using it in excess is detrimental. Also, they can be an irritant to the eyes, lungs, as well as skin if you overuse them.
